The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of whoever is responsible for killing a federally-protected gray wolf in Central Oregon. The carcass was found on April 23 about 20 miles northwest of Klamath Falls on the Fremont-Winema National Forest. Wolves in the western two-thirds of Oregon are under federal protection and on the U.S. Endangered Species List. Wolves in Eastern Oregon are no longer federally protected. Because of that federal protection, the federal agency is offering the reward. However, shooting a wolf without permission is also a criminal act under state wolf regulations. The Oregon State Police and the USFWS are investigating. The OSP TIP line is 800-452-7888. Callers may remain anonymous.
