Papalaxsimisha, OHSU cervical cancer awareness events Tues., Jan. 20

January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month and Papalaxsimisha has two events planned focusing on cervical health and led by OHSU doctor Amanda Bruegl. Dr. Bruegl specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers, and she also has a research interest in cancer prevention and improving access to treatment in the Alaska Native/Native American population. She is Oneida, Stockbridge-Munsee.

On Tuesday, January 20^th there will be a Lunch & Learn discussion about the cervical cancer screening process, de-mystifying the pelvic exam and the importance of getting screened. This event will include lunch and raffle prizes and will start at noon in the IHS atrium. Later in the day, Dr. Bruegl will lead a conversation about cervical health and wellness during an event at the old school cafeteria. A meal will be provided at 5:30 and the conversation will follow.

Madras varsity basketball teams close out pre-season play with losses to Stayton

Friday night in the Buffalo Dome, the Madras girls’ basketball team had a tough go against last year’s 4A state champions and the current number one ranked team Stayton. Despite committing several turnovers, the Eagles were able stop the Lady Buffs’ offensive attack with a smothering defense. Madras scored most of their points from the free throw line and Stayton won 48-19. Madras now sets its sights on Tri-Valley League play with a 7-7 preseason record and on top of those standings.

The Madras boys played at Stayton High School Friday and it was close. The Eagles were able to get ahead in the game’s final few minutes and Madras lost 69-61.

Both teams head into league play tomorrow night. The boys are currently in second place in TVL and will host Gladstone. The girls will visit Gladstone.

KWSO will broadcast the home game live with Wilman and Ted at 7pm.
