The Warm Springs Vital Statistics Department is urging 2026 tribal member high school graduates to submit their final transcripts and diplomas as soon as possible. Graduates can deliver the documents in person to the Vital Statistics office inside the Tribal Administration Building or request their school counselor to send them via email.

Jefferson County School District 509J is seeking a community volunteer to fill an open seat on its budget committee. Working alongside five elected school board members, the appointed volunteer will serve a three-year term evaluating proposed programs and recommending a balanced financial plan. Applicants must be registered voters living within district boundaries who are not district employees or officers, with applications open on the district website through August 31st.

Wildland firefighting resources across Central Oregon remain stretched thin following an intense July 15th storm that delivered over 2,000 lightning strikes and ignited more than 85 fires. Five specialized management teams and over 500 additional personnel are now managing 27 active blazes across the region. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, the Akawa Butte Fire west of Culver has surpassed 10,000 acres, prompting the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office to update evacuation levels ahead of a Monday evening virtual community meeting hosted on the Sisters-Camp Sherman Fire District Facebook page. Meanwhile, fire officials report the Brewer Fire in Jefferson and Crook counties has scorched over 24,000 acres at 1% containment, while the Box Springs Fire has jumped to 4,200 acres at 0% containment.

Across the state, major wildfire complexes continue to expand, highlighted by the massive Rowe Creek Complex Fire in north-central Oregon. Reporting by KOIN indicates the complex has surged past 126,000 acres across Wasco, Wheeler, and Crook counties, remaining at 0% containment as the merged Crosswhite Fire accounts for over 113,000 acres.

Conservationists are celebrating the protection of 2,300 acres along Rattlesnake Creek near White Salmon in the Columbia River Gorge. Managed by The Conservation Fund and transferred to the Columbia Land Trust, the thinned forest land will remain open to the public and support stream restoration for local salmon and trout. “The goal is that we protect all 100,000 acres as forest land into the future,” said Kaola Swanson of The Conservation Fund, emphasizing that the organization works to deliver “both environmental and community benefit work.”
