The Museum at Warm Springs and Caldera will host community workshops and a culminating performance with international musicians traveling with OneBeat, the pioneering music diplomacy program initiated by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and produced by Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation. OneBeat are artists in residence at Caldera near Sisters. People of all ages are welcome to attend the free workshops, an opportunity for unique sharing through music. To take part, show up at the first workshop on Wednesday, September 27th from 3:45 – 5:30pm. Workshops will continue on September 28th, October 3rd and October 5th with the performance following the final workshop. OneBeat is made up of 25 international musicians who will be in Oregon creating new music and teaching around central Oregon. After their time in Oregon, they will travel the West to other locations training and performing. Caldera works with young people from central Oregon including Warm Springs. Caldera begins with students in the sixth grade and sticks with them through high school in weekly mentoring classes, high school workshops, weekend intensives and summer camp.
The seventh Annual Warm Springs Tribal Celebration at Mount Hood Ski Bowl is this Saturday and everyone is welcome. The festivities will begin at 1:00pm at Skibowl west with a blessing and presentation of the flag. Tribal members will be hosting a variety of booths showcasing and demonstrating native wares, arts and crafts and foods. The booths will be open from 2:00pm to 4:00pm, with opportunities for viewing and purchasing of items and food. Throughout the day a variety of traditional dances and songs will be performed by Warm Springs dancers. In 2012 Mt. Hood Skibowl opened the Mt. Hood Tribal Heritage Center, named’ Wiwnu Wash’ which translates as ‘The place of the Huckleberry’. This center showcases the past, present and future of the three Warm Springs tribes, along with a display of native items.
Your votes can help the Warm Springs Community Action Team and its IDA program win a $15,000 grant. It is entered in a competition for Strong Communities Award, against three other organizations, located in Minnesota, Iowa, and South Dakota. Whoever gets the most votes wins the $15,000 grant. You have today and tomorrow to vote – you can do it once a day online. The Community Action Team will use the funds to purchase more textbooks for its courses, pay for meals at classes, and pay for administrative costs related to the management of its IDA program. The Madras High School Football team is aiming for its first Tri-Valley win in a long time tomorrow night at home. The 19-7 non-conference win over Valley Catholic last week snapped a 23-game losing streak and the Buffs face Molalla tomorrow night in a Tri-Valley matchup. Madras Coach Kurt Taylor told the Bend Bulletin he is optimistic and that his teams’ hard work and their belief in themselves are the two biggest changes from last season.
Madras Volleyball fell to Corbett 3-0 yesterday. And, in boys water polo, Mountain View defeated Madras 21-6.
Today Madras boys Soccer will host Estacada at 4:00. The girls soccer teams play at Estacada.
