509J School Board Meeting 092214The Jefferson County 509 J School board met for their regular meeting last night (Monday 9/2/14) at the Warm Springs K-8 Academy. On their agenda was hearing of requests for inter-district student transfer, NYP Grading, the Illuminate Grading Program, Bussing and School Times, Food Service Modifications, Strategic Plan Input, Review of Policies and other business. There was extended discussion about Madras High School Proficiency grading and the eligibility requirements for extracurricular activity with regard to grade checks. Also – the need to launch the Illuminate Grading Program which replaces Power School for tracking student grades. Safety concerns were raised about students who walk to school in Greeley Heights and feedback was given on bus issues. The next regular meeting of the Board will be Monday, October 13, 2014, in the Board Conference Room at the District Support Services Building on Buff Street in Madras beginning at 7:00pm.  School Board meetings are open to the public.

Early last week – Tribal Council and Fish & Wildlife committee decided to put Ceremonial Hunting on hold until training could be arranged for hunters and fisherman. There was discussion about concerns regarding the quality of meat and fish held in the Tribal Freezer. The dates for Ceremonial Hunters training have been announced for next Thursday and Friday October 2nd and 3rd at the Agency Longhouse. All Deer, Elk and Fish Handlers need to attend.

A regular election will be held on Election Day Tuesday, November 4th for positions on the Madras City Council: Including the Position of Mayor and 3 City Councilor positions. Running for Mayor is Royce W. Embanks Jr. and Running for City Councilor are: Richard K. Ladeby, Jim Leach, Bill Montgomery and Clifford L. Rhodes. The vote will be by mail and will be conducted by the Jefferson County Elections Official in compliance with state election law.

Today is voter registration day. In Oregon if you are 18 or older by election day – you can register to vote. To register or to check on your voter registration status you can go online to http://sos.oregon.gov/voting/.
