Community Calendar for Tuesday April 2, 2019

  • Through a partnership with East Cascades Works, Worksource Oregon and COCC – Warm Springs GED received a Grant called the Warm Spring Future Ready Oregon Grant will pay for eligible 2019 Spring Quarter GED students, fees, textbooks, test vouchers, test fees, and incentive payments of $25 per week for attendance.   Students must be co-enrolled with Warm Springs Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act office and Worksource Oregon, and have 100% attendance in all enrolled classes to maintain eligibility for incentive payments.  To enroll contact Melinda Poitra at the education Building  Room 307 or call 541-553-3324
  • Spring Term GED class starts this week and will run through June 13th at the Warm Springs Education Center which is located in the old boys dorm. Anyone interested MUST attend class this week to register.  It’s mandatory to attend one orientation for math and one for communication to register.  Essentials of Communication class is Wednesday 1-4pm and Essentials of Math class is today and Thursday from 1-4pm.
  • Madras High School Skills USA is hosting the Second Annual Community Talent Show today and tomorrow at the Madras Performing Arts Center. Doors open at 6:30, shows are at 7 both evenings. Tickets will be sold at the door.
  • Today’s Senior Lunch at noon is baked chicken breasts, black bean rice pilaf, salad and fruit. Seniors 60 and older eat for free, 59 and under are $5 and youth under 13 are $3 at the Senior Wellness Center.
  • The Jefferson County Food Bank is located at 556 SE Seventh Street in Madras. They are open for distribution this afternoon.
  • Voc Rehab in Warm Springs will hold an orientation session today at 3:00 in Behavioral Health Center conference room. Those who cannot make it to one of the scheduled weekly sessions can call 541-553-4952 to request a one-on-one orientation.
  • The local effort to develop Tribal Curriculum that is part of Oregon Senate Bill 13 will conclude with final meetings today at the Agency Longhouse. The focus will be on Tribal Government.    There will be a meeting from 3-5 and again from 6-8 with a dinner provided at 5:30.   Community Input is being sought.  Senate Bill 13’s subtitle is: Tribal History is Shared History.
  • There is a Wellbriety Warriors Accepting Recovery meeting this evening from 6:30-8:30 at the high lookee lodge. It is open to anyone seeking sobriety and wellness.

 Thursday 4/4

  • Tribal Council Election Day is this Thursday 8am until 8pm at the Community Center, the Seekseequa Fire Hall and the Simnasho Longhouse. 8 individuals will be voted in to serve on the 28th Tribal Council.  You can hear KWSO Candidates Program by District this afternoon at 1 for Agency, 2 for Simnasho and 2:30 for Seekseequa.  Candidate interviews and recordings from forums can also be listened to here on KWSO.org.
  • Art Adventure Gallery will have an opening reception Thursday for its exhibit “Explorations: Discoveries, Stories in Bronze & Oil” by Donald Stastny. It’s from 5:30-7 at the gallery located on 5th Street in Madras.
  • Heart of Oregon YouthBuild is recruiting young people ages 16-24 for its Spring cohort beginning in mid-April. Members can earn a GED, diploma, college credit and job skills working in the classroom and in the field. Anyone interested must attend an information session to be considered. The next info session is this Thursday from 5-6:30pm in Prineville. Call 541-526-1380 to get details and to sign up.
  • COCC is hosting an evening of Native American flute and percussion music at Wille Hall on the Bend Campus Thursday. Grammy nominees R. Carlos Nakai and Will Clipman will perform from 6-8pm. It’s free and open to the public.

A Jefferson County Veterans Service Outreach officer comes to the Warm Springs Senior Center on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Appointments are available for the morning by calling 541-475-5228.

The Native Youth Exploring Higher Education summer camp at Washington State University is taking applications now through June 15th. The free camp is July 15-19 and is open to students who will enter grades 9-10 in the fall. It’s for students to learn about college opportunities and education.
