It’s day 4 at the Warm Springs K-8 Academy for the combined afterschool efforts of the 21st Century Learning program and the Boys & Girls club. At the end of the school day – kids involved in those programs enjoy a meal and then choose from a menu of activities – both with academic focus as well as fun choices – that might involve physical activity, games, or learning new skills. The new arrangement that includes the relocation of the Boys & Girls Club at the K8 was approved by the 509J school board last week. The Madras Pioneer reports other business for the school board on September 9th included approval for bus transportation for 8 high school students that previously attended the K-8 Big Muddy School to attend Madras High School instead of doing online or home schooling. The board also approved an agreement for the Redmond Proficiency Academy to pay a fee to Madras High for classes taken by students or for sports participation.
Yesterday morning Redmond Police were dispatched to Elton Gregory Middle School to respond to a student who was using a knife to carve into a wall and bench. Per school safety procedures, the school was immediately put into lockdown. A lockdown occurs when any level of threat or potential threat happens inside a school facility. Officers arrived on the scene, detained and removed the student from school property. Nowadays schools practice Standard Response Protocols for incidents like this lockdown – there is also lockouts. For local families – information about the Standard Response Protocols was included in the Warm Springs K-8 Academy September Newsletter.
