Paddle to Celilo 2023 is in the planning stages with the Warm Springs Canoe Family leading efforts to bring the Tribal Canoe Journey to the homelands of the Wasco and Warm Springs peoples.  Tribal Canoe Journeys began in 1989 with a Paddle to Seattle.  The effort offers communities the opportunity to focus on the Paddle event as a way for families, teens and young adults to reconnect to their Tribal Culture and Lifeways.  Historically canoes provided people of the Northwest and the Columbia River with transportation.  As Tribes were moved to reservations away from waterways – canoe knowledge and use was reduced.  Last week Tribal Council heard an initial presentation about Paddle to Celilo 2023 from Jefferson Greene and members of the N’chi Wanapum Canoe Family.  Warm Springs has participated in 11 canoe journeys.  For more information about this ambitious undertaking check out this week’s Spilyay Tymoo – its out tomorrow.

Despite this improvement, the report also found an alarming change: the rate of illegal little cigar sales more than doubled in the past year. Little cigars, sometimes called “cigarillos,” are popular with youth and come in fruit flavors like “Tropical Fusion” and “Boozy Mango.”
